Two kayakers who got into trouble in the Hauraki Gulf have been rescued

They were unable to get the vessel back to shore and it drifted out to sea off Orere Point in the Firth of Thames.

One of the kayakers called police - using a waterproofed mobile phone - as it got dark at about 8.30pm.

A helicopter spotted them and guided a police launch.

Police Maritime Unit sergeant Garry Larsen said the kayakers were cold, as they had been in and out of the water. They were brought on board the launch shortly before 10pm.

They were wearing lifejackets and prepared for the worst.
