The year of uncertainty didn’t stop the Mount Maunganui Yacht Club from hosting the 17th Legends Regatta.

The Labour Weekend tradition had 34 boats take part, making this year’s event the biggest ever.

The Legends Regatta series features four races over four days: one to Great Mercury Island on Friday, the Mike McCormick Race around the Island on Saturday, a triangular course in the Colville Channel on Sunday and a return race on Monday.

“It was a fantastic turnout this year,” says Mount Yacht Club media member Lyndsay Hayward.

“The first race on Friday and Monday’s final race were motor-sailing for most. It was fair weather and mostly clear skies all weekend long.”

Team Candela won the series overall, followed by La Vida and Sophie Rose in second and third – a completely new top three from last year. Only three points separated second, third and fourth places.

Not Negotiable took out the Mike McCormick race and Scout won the random prize-draw, taking home the B&G Zeus 9 Chart Plotter that retails at more than $3000.

“Scout is a new member to the Club and the smallest boat in the Regatta fleet at 24 ft. Scout sailed 17 hours from Tauranga to get to Great Mercury Island and received a bottle of rum for their determined effort.”

The final prize giving took place on at the Mount Ocean Sports Club October 31.

“It was a full house, highlighting the success of the regatta at emphasising fair play, skills, friendship and fun.

“We are grateful to the volunteers and sponsors who make the Regatta possible.”

Plenty more prizes will be up for grabs at the Club’s next race to White Island on November 14.
