MMYC 2020 Winter Series

After a challenging start to the series due to COVID-19, the 2020 season saw a fantastic turn out overall with some cracking conditions and terrible tales.

Winter on the Tauranga Harbour brings some of the best and worst conditions for sailing, ranging from fresh and fast, gusty and squally to light and in-limbo. Despite mother nature, she still provides an ideal opportunity for boats to get out  and enjoy all that Tauranga Moana has to offer along with the promise of excellent banter, cold beer and sea stories back at the Mount Ocean Sports Club. This year we had an extremely popular two-handed series with many newcomers joining the fun. Of note, Robyn and Lyndsay from Rascal Tom rounding out with a consistent performance landing them second overall in the series.

Not Negotiable dominated the series with a clear lead to win the trophy. Only one point separated 2nd, 3rd (River Rebel) 4th (Sunshine) and 5th (Sophie Rose) making for some quality racing and fights to the line.

Sophie Rose, followed by Sunshine took out the Open B Division this year. With a small B Division fleet this year, we would love to see more boats join in. MMYC operate to a Mark Foy start, split into two divisions. B Division is ideal for boats without spinnakers or still building confidence out on the water in a racing environment.

With an exciting range of course options for all divisions, the racing is still fun, challenging and a great way to involve the whole family.

Just two points separated Not Negotiable (1st) and Pork Chop (2nd) in the Open A Division.

Truxton came roaring into 3rd place turning out some great results in the second half of the season.

With the Summer Series underway we look forward to welcoming in the warmer weather and fairer winds.  MMYC are a Yachting NZ affiliated club, one of three based at the Mount Ocean Sports Club in the heart of Pilot Bay. Our facilities have the best view in the harbour, outstanding food and some of the best company in the Bay.
