Ever looked up at one of the cruise ships that dominate the Mount Maunganui skyline over the summer months and wondered what life on board was like?

SunLive has, and we were lucky enough to be invited to spend a day on the luxurious Explorer of the Seas liner this week to find out for ourselves.

With its 15 decks, 15 bars, clubs and lounges and 10 pools and whirlpools, Explorer of the Seas is the largest cruise ship to visit Tauranga this summer, and is the kind of floating holiday resort that appeals to all.

Aside from the above, the liner boasts a rock-climbing wall, an ice skating rink, a mini-golf course, a basketball court, jogging tracks and a surf simulator.

If that’s not enough, an outdoor pool-side movie screen lights up the night sky, while its impressive main theatre hosts Broadway-style entertainment indoors alongside a Vegas-themed casino which stretches almost 10,000 square feet.

And the good news is, the Bay of Plenty hasn’t seen the last of the Explorer of the Seas this season, with the 312-metre long vessel due to return a further eight times between now and April 18 next year.

Having undergone a $122 million overhaul in Spain earlier this year, December 28 is its next scheduled stop in the region – all 138,194 tonnes of her.

Check out the video above as SunLive’s Tracy Hardy joined the crew for a detailed tour of the impressive vessel, which can carry up to 3,844 passengers at a time.
